The Best Pubs & Beer Gardens in Hull, Right on Your Doorstep | Castle Homes

May in Hull is a good time to start getting your bearings. If you’re sticking around over summer, you’ll want to know where to spend the sunny days. And if you’re moving into student accommodation in September, consider this your head start.

Hull’s pub scene has a lot going for it. There are cheap-and-cheerful classics, great outdoor spaces, and a handful of spots that locals keep coming back to.

Here are the ones worth putting on your list…

University Wetherspoons

Let’s start with the obvious one. Spoons is on campus, it’s cheap, and it’s reliable. A £3 pint after a lecture or a full breakfast before you’ve had time to wake up properly; it does what it does, and it does it well. No complaints here.

Gardener’s Arms, Cottingham Road

This is a proper student pub. It’s lively, the beer garden is great, and the crowd reflects the area well. If the sun comes out, this is an easy first choice. One of the most popular spots near student homes in Hull for a reason.

Dive, Princes Avenue

Dive is a bit different, and that’s the point. It’s an alternative/emo/rock bar with outdoor seating, and during the day it doubles as a coffee shop. So you can go in for a flat white in the afternoon and end up staying for a pint in the evening. Worth knowing about.

Pave, Princes Avenue

Princes Avenue is one of Hull’s best areas, and Pave is a big part of why. Street-side seating, a lively atmosphere, and a great spot to sit and watch the street go by. It gets busy, which honestly just adds to the energy. Good for a full evening out, and a firm favourite with locals.

Spati, Newland Avenue

A German-style bar with a serious selection of beers, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. If you’re after something a bit different from the usual pub offering, Spati delivers. Newland Avenue itself is a great stretch to explore, especially if your student rooms in Hull put you in that part of the city.

Larkin’s Bar, Newland Avenue

Just along from Spati, Larkin’s is relaxed, airy, and specialises in craft beers. There’s a lovely little outdoor seating area, bare-brick walls, and a hearty food menu with sharing plates. The kind of place that earns a regular spot in your rotation.

Head of Steam, Trinity Square

Right in the city centre, Head of Steam sits next to the Minster with a view that earns its own mention. The beer, wine, and spirits range is extensive, the food is great, and there’s quality live music and events throughout the year. A solid reason to head into town.

Taphouse, Humber Street

Humber Street has become one of Hull’s most exciting areas, and Taphouse sits comfortably at the heart of it. The beer garden is a proper sun trap. There’s an impressive range of craft ales, ciders, and beers on tap, and the food hits the mark too. One of the best spots in the city.

Brain Jar, Trinity Square

Save this one for when you’re treating yourself. Brain Jar is a cocktail bar that came fourth in a list of the top 50 cocktail bars in the UK: yes, in the whole country. Quirky cocktails, a great atmosphere, and the kind of place that makes you realise Hull is a bit special.
